We define molecular diagnostics broadly as tests employing a variety of innovative technologies to better diagnose and treat patients. Molecular diagnostics can improve physicians’ ability to administer the right dose of the right treatment to the right patients at the right time.

Innovation allowing more personalized treatment

Advances in biology and bioinformatics have enabled unprecedented analysis of human genes and proteins, leading to the development of new molecular tests for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases.

The emergence of new technologies provides the ability to design innovative diagnostic tools and develop new, targeted therapies based on a detailed understanding of the molecular pathways and biomarkers that lead to specific diseases.

In clinical practice, new molecular tests may help physicians select medicines for individual patients that would have the greatest efficacy and the lowest probability of harmful side effects. These tests may help detect disease at early stages, segment diseases, monitor progression and therapy effectiveness, and perhaps identify disease predisposition in the future.

Our research focuses on molecular pathways that may be shared by various diseases and have captured a wealth of new targets through the systematic mining of molecular pathways. Our approach to research helps us better understand the genomic underpinnings of disease, enabling us to create outcome-driven diagnostics through validating the markers we are already using in clinical development.

Novartis Molecular Diagnostics leverages the company’s strengths in pharmaceutical research and development to deliver significant value through two sets of products:

• Companion diagnostics that help identify and monitor patients who are most likely to respond to specific treatments and to inform clinical decision-making related to those treatments

• Stand-alone diagnostics that inform clinical decision-making and help to improve diagnosis, prognosis and outcomes
